Story
In post-WWII Tokyo, Allied soldiers eagerly bought newly struck prints directly from bombed-out studios. Hasui's serene Mount Fuji landscapes became international symbols of enduring Japanese beauty amid reconstruction.
Maker / Origin
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the preeminent master of the Shin-hanga ('New Prints') movement, creating over 600 poetic landscape views of Japan. Working closely with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, Hasui was later designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Intangible Cultural Property) by the Japanese government shortly before his death.
Condition & Value
Very good overall color saturation and sharp impression; light marginal toning/foxing spots along the borders and small tape residue remnants at the top edge verso. Minor age-appropriate toning does not significantly detract from value.
