This exquisite Japanese porcelain lidded bowl (*futamono*) showcases rich *aka-e* (iron-red) overglaze enamel framing reserved white cherry blossoms accented with fine gold leaf. Made during the peaceful mid-to-late Edo period, this lidded porcelain bowl brought spring cherry blossoms indoors to high-end banquet tables through delicate wax-resist reserving and lavish gold detailing.
Maker / Origin
Produced by master artisans in the storied ceramic region of Arita (modern Saga Prefecture), the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. While unsigned, as was customary for domestic Edo-period dining ceramics, it represents the pinnacle of multi-stage kiln production where potting, underglaze blue, and muffle-kiln overglaze enameling were divided among specialized guilds.
Condition & Value
Visually in very good antique condition. Minor expected glaze pinholes and kiln grit at the footring, with very light rubbing to the high-points of the gilding consistent with age. Free of visible chips or cracks.
