Overview

This is a wonderfully heavy, sculptural piece of vintage art glass designed to function as a desk letter rack. Crafted from thick, ice-like cast glass, it features a central curved dip that serves as a pen rest, flanked by three deep slots for organizing correspondence. Its brutalist, organic texture captures and refracts light beautifully, turning a mundane office accessory into a work of tabletop art.

Story

In the 1960s, European glassmakers revolutionized office spaces by turning utilitarian desk tools into heavy, light-catching sculptures. This piece was designed to bring the raw beauty of frozen Nordic ice directly onto a businessman's mahogany desk.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned, this style of heavy, textured 'ice glass' was pioneered by mid-century Scandinavian giants like Iittala and Strombergshyttan, as well as select Murano workshops in Italy. These makers rejected the delicate, blown-glass traditions of the past in favor of rugged, mold-cast designs that celebrated the elemental, liquid nature of molten glass.

Condition & Value

The glass appears bright and clear with no major visible clouding. There is some minor surface residue or tape adhesive in the central dip that can be easily cleaned. Check the inner slots and bottom corners for tiny flea bites or hairline cracks; excellent, chip-free condition commands the top end of the value range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
