Overview
A classic example of Mexican 'Brunido' (burnished) earthenware, featuring a hand-painted stylized heron amidst aquatic flora.
Story
The town of Tonalá has been a center of ceramic excellence since long before the Spanish arrived, once known as the 'City of the Sun' by the Aztecs who prized its potters above all others.
Maker / Origin
While this piece appears unsigned, it originates from the Tonalá tradition where entire families specialize in specific roles, from preparing the local clay to the final polishing.
Condition & Value
The plate appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks. The burnished surface is sensitive to scratching, but this example shows very little wear to the delicate mineral pigments. The presence of the original clay hanging loop on the reverse is a plus for collectors.

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.
