Overview
A charming pair of miniature brass-bodied salt and pepper shakers decorated in the traditional Chinese cloisonné enamel technique. They feature a classic five-clawed imperial dragon chasing the flaming pearl amidst stylized clouds on a black ground, complete with their original brass shaker tops.
Story
Crafted during a period of booming trade with the West, these shakers adapted ancient imperial dragon motifs for Western dining tables. They represent a fascinating cultural bridge where sacred Chinese mythology met the everyday etiquette of European and American dinner parties.
Maker / Origin
While these pieces do not bear a maker's mark, they were produced in specialized metalworking workshops in traditional craft centers like Beijing or Guangzhou. These workshops employed highly skilled artisans who specialized in translating monumental imperial court styles into small, export-friendly decorative objects.
Condition & Value
The shakers show minor pitting, typical enamel bubbles from the firing process, and light oxidation on the brass rims and undersides. The turquoise enamel on the recessed bases is largely intact, which is excellent for pieces of this age. Overall very good antique condition.
