Overview
This is a vibrant, lime-green glazed ceramic guardian lion, traditionally known in the West as a 'Foo Dog'. Depicted as a male holding an openwork embroidered ball (temari) under his paw, this playful yet protective figure is designed to ward off negative energy. Its striking monochromatic glaze and stylized features make it a classic example of mid-century Asian-influenced garden and patio decor.
Story
Ancient Chinese palaces used massive stone lions to guard their gates. By the 1960s, Western designers shrunk these beasts into colorful ceramic statues, turning ancient spiritual protectors into chic patio conversation pieces.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece belongs to the rich tradition of Shiwan and export ceramic workshops in Southern China and Japan. During the mid-20th century, these potteries pivoted to supply Western department stores and import shops with highly stylized, brightly glazed garden ornaments that capitalized on the Hollywood Regency and Tiki design crazes.
Condition & Value
The statue appears to be in very good vintage condition with no major visible cracks, chips, or structural repairs. The fine crazing throughout the green glaze is consistent with outdoor display and age, which collectors generally expect and find desirable.
