Overview
This is a pair of highly collectible, original cardboard promotional standees from the cultural phenomenon E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. One display features the legendary Reese's Pieces tie-in promotion offering free rainbow reflector stickers, while the other advertises the highly anticipated home videocassette release by MCA and Pepsi.
Story
In 1982, Spielberg's masterpiece changed cinema forever, but it also revolutionized modern product placement. Hershey's agreed to spend $1 million promoting E.T. in exchange for using Reese's Pieces, a gamble that saved the struggling candy brand. These fragile cardboard survivors were meant to be thrown away by grocery and video store clerks, making their preservation a minor miracle.
Maker / Origin
These displays were produced by commercial printing contractors for Universal City Studios, Hershey Foods Corporation, and MCA Home Video.
Condition & Value
Both displays appear to be in remarkably good, vibrant condition with minimal color fading. There is minor edge wear and light corner bumping visible, which is typical for vintage cardboard. The videocassette display appears to still be sealed in its original protective shrink wrap, which greatly preserves its value.
