Overview
An incredibly rare and enigmatic low wooden table, likely used for divination (Saju), calculation, or a traditional numbers game. It features a dark lacquered top surface hand-carved with Arabic numerals 0 through 9, a central square grid, and robust iron strap hinges.
Story
Carved into this dark wood is a bridge between worlds. While Joseon-era scholars used traditional systems, the presence of hand-carved Arabic numerals suggests a fascinating cross-cultural encounter with Western traders or missionaries.
Maker / Origin
Crafted by an anonymous Korean woodworker, this piece reflects the vernacular furniture traditions of the late Joseon period. Rather than courtly luxury, it represents the functional, deeply spiritual, and intellectual life of provincial scholars or local diviners.
Condition & Value
The table shows beautiful, authentic wear consistent with age, including minor scuffs, edge wear, and a rich, darkened patina to the lacquer. The iron hinges show stable oxidation; overall excellent structural condition. This original, untouched patina greatly preserves its historical value.
