Overview

This is a pair of vintage Infinity Studio Monitor (SM 152) floor-standing speakers featuring massive 15-inch woofers, dual midranges, and high-output tweeters. Known as 'party monsters' of the audio world, these American-made towers were designed for exceptionally high efficiency and powerful bass output.

Story

In 1968, aerospace engineers founded Infinity in a California garage using aerospace materials to push acoustic limits. By the late 80s, these giant SM 152 towers were engineered to deliver massive, room-shaking audio efficiency.

Maker / Origin

Infinity Systems was co-founded by Arnie Nudell, John Ulrick, and Cary Christie, who applied advanced aerospace techniques to loudspeaker design. They revolutionized the high-end audio market with innovations like planar magnetic drivers and polypropylene cones, becoming a hallmark of American hi-fi heritage before being acquired by Harman International.

Condition & Value

The cabinets show visible wear and surface scuffs around the edges, and the driver surrounds appear aged. Re-foaming the woofers or midranges is a common requirement for speakers of this age; degraded foam reduces value by 30-40% until restored.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
