Overview
An exquisite oval wall mirror featuring a deeply undercut, hand-carved dark wood frame adorned with high-relief roses, blossoms, and trailing foliage. The inner bezel is highlighted with a contrasting gilt slip, framing a bevelled glass plate that shows gentle, authentic silvering degradation.
Story
In the 1800s, Swiss carvers turned a winter survival skill into a global luxury craze. Tourists on the Grand Tour flocked to Brienz to buy these lifelike botanical carvings. This mirror brought the wild, romantic beauty of the Alps directly into a refined Victorian parlor.
Maker / Origin
While often unsigned, these pieces were crafted by highly skilled artisans in regional workshops across Switzerland, Germany, and France. The town of Brienz, Switzerland, was the epicenter of this craft, establishing a woodcarving school in 1884 to standardize the exceptional quality of these naturalistic designs.
Condition & Value
The carved frame appears remarkably intact with only minor, expected dust accumulation in the deep recesses and tiny chips to the leaf tips. The mirror glass shows light desilvering and clouding near the bottom edge, which is highly desirable as it proves its antique age.
