Overview
An antique Japanese Ko-Imari (Old Imari) porcelain figure depicting a beautiful woman (bijin) cradling a small dog. Standing approximately 29cm tall, this hand-painted sculpture features a vibrant cobalt blue underglaze kimono adorned with overglaze polychrome enamels of chrysanthemums and waves.
Story
During the 19th century, Japanese kilns in Arita crafted elegant porcelain beauties to captivate both domestic collectors and Western trade merchants. This lady cradles a small dog, a symbol of fidelity and domestic warmth, capturing a quiet, intimate moment from a bygone era.
Maker / Origin
Produced in the historic kiln region of Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. While individual artisans rarely signed these sculptural figures, they were created by highly specialized workshops where clay molders and master enamel painters collaborated to bring these three-dimensional characters to life.
Condition & Value
The figure shows signs of age-appropriate wear, particularly around the neck where there is visible residue or old adhesive/dirt buildup that should be carefully examined to rule out an old professional repair. There is minor wear to the overglaze enamels and gilding, which is typical for a piece of this age.
