Overview
An extensive collection of Spode's iconic 'Christmas Tree' pattern dinnerware, featuring a wide variety of serving pieces, hollowware, and specialty items. The collection includes a large covered tureen, a teapot, a tea kettle, tiered serving trays, baking dishes, and numerous original boxes.
Story
In 1938, a young designer named Harold Holdway was asked to create a Christmas pattern for Spode's American agent. Having never decorated a Christmas tree himself, he placed the presents on the branches rather than under them, creating a charming quirk that remains to this day.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Josiah Spode in 1770, the company revolutionized the ceramics industry by perfecting the formula for fine bone china and mastering underglaze blue transfer printing. Spode became synonymous with British ceramic excellence, earning royal warrants and producing some of the most enduring tableware patterns in history.
Condition & Value
The collection appears to be in excellent, gently used condition with no visible chips, cracks, or heavy crazing in the photos. The presence of original boxes suggests careful storage, which greatly helps preserve the glaze and hand-painted green rims. Excellent condition with original packaging commands a premium.
