Overview
A complete set of four hand-carved hardwood snack trays featuring an organic, biomorphic 'kidney' shape typical of Mid-Century design. Each tray includes a recessed cork-lined coaster to prevent glass slippage and a shallow well for hors d'oeuvres.
Story
Post-war Japan became a hub for high-quality woodcraft exported to North America. These trays were designed for the 'TV Dinner' revolution, allowing families to dine stylishly while gathered around the new household hearth: the television set.
Maker / Origin
Imperial International was a major mid-century importer based in New York and Toronto, known for bringing Japanese craftsmanship to the Western middle class. Their 'Kala-Wood' line specifically marketed the 'hand-rubbed' and 'hand-carved' nature of the products to distinguish them from mass-produced plastic alternatives.
Condition & Value
The trays appear to be in excellent vintage condition with the cork intact. The original box shows significant wear and some tearing, which slightly tempers the collector value but confirms authenticity. Excellent wood preservation commands a premium. Value is driven by the presence of the original box and the complete set of four.
