The exterior is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a narrative scene depicting horseback warriors and court figures set in a rocky landscape with pines and pavilions, framed by broad ruyi and lappet borders.

Popularized during the Ming and Qing dynasties, large narrative planters like this illustrated dramatic scenes from classic historical sagas such as the 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' to bring tales of chivalry right into grand courtyard gardens.

Produced by kiln artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, where master potters worked in specialized teams. While unmarked, the wheel-thrown body, unglazed sandy base, and spontaneous brushwork reflect the commercial kiln traditions that supplied both domestic estates and international export markets.
