Overview
This is a substantial Chinese porcelain basin featuring a hand-painted underglaze blue interior depicting Daoist immortals and scholars, contrasted by a vibrant, unglazed or matte iron-red slip exterior. The interior scene centers on a seated figure beneath a pine tree, surrounded by attendants and auspicious symbols, framed by a classic geometric diaper border.
Story
Created during a time of great transition in China, this bowl blends traditional Daoist folklore with a highly unusual, bold iron-red exterior. The central figure represents Shou Lao, the god of longevity, offering a daily wish of long life to its household.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece originates from the historic kiln networks of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world. The artisans here worked in highly specialized workshops, passing down brushwork techniques through generations to meet the insatiable global demand for Chinese narrative ceramics.
Condition & Value
The bowl shows signs of age and utilitarian use, including minor glaze pitting, firing imperfections, and wear to the rim. The unglazed foot rim has significant dark staining and wear consistent with age, but no major structural cracks or large chips are immediately visible. Excellent preservation of the interior glaze.
