Overview
This is an original cocktail-table style arcade cabinet featuring the classic shooter game 'Carnival,' released in 1980. Designed for bars, lounges, and restaurants, this sit-down cabinet allowed players to face each other across a glass tabletop while enjoying a drink. It represents a pivotal moment in gaming history when arcades transitioned from dark, youth-centric spaces into mainstream social venues.
Story
In 1980, Sega and Gremlin teamed up to release Carnival, a digital shooting gallery that became an instant hit. This cocktail cabinet was designed specifically for bars, allowing patrons to play while resting their drinks on the glass. It is one of the earliest games to feature a continuous musical soundtrack, looping Sousa's 'Over the Waves' to mimic a real carnival.
Maker / Origin
Gremlin Industries, founded in San Diego in 1971, was an early pioneer in the American arcade market. In 1978, they were acquired by Sega, a Japanese gaming giant looking to establish a stronger manufacturing foothold in the United States.
Condition & Value
The cabinet exterior shows moderate wear consistent with age and commercial use, including scuffs on the wood-grain laminate and minor wear on the control panel graphics. The glass top appears intact, and the coin door retains its keys.
