Overview
A striking, heavy pressed-glass horse figurine featuring a stylized, highly textured mane and tail reminiscent of ancient Tang Dynasty pottery horses. Crafted in crystal-clear glass, this sculptural piece captures the bold, expressive aesthetic of mid-century American art glass.
Story
In the 1960s, West Virginia glassmakers looked to ancient history for modern inspiration. This stylized horse, with its dramatic arched neck and scalloped mane, was directly inspired by ancient Chinese tomb sculptures. It brought a touch of exotic, classical antiquity into the sleek, modern living rooms of mid-century America.
Maker / Origin
The Viking Glass Company, originally founded as New Martinsville Glass in 1901, rebranded in 1944 to focus on colorful, dramatic, and modern decorative glassware. They became famous for their 'Epic' line, which featured elongated, sculptural animal figures and swung vases that defined the mid-century American tabletop aesthetic.
Condition & Value
The figurine appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or flea bites along the highly vulnerable scalloped edges of the mane and tail. The glass retains excellent clarity without cloudiness or 'sick glass' syndrome. Excellent condition preserves the maximum collector value.
