Overview
A wonderfully preserved vintage advertising matchbook from the historic Candle Light Inn, once located at 3131 Commodore Plaza in the bohemian enclave of Coconut Grove, Florida. The cover features a charming hand-drawn illustration of the restaurant's brick facade, while the inside flap lists mid-century culinary specialties like prime rib, stone crabs, and the name of manager Henry Leitson.
Story
During the 1960s, Coconut Grove was a legendary haven for artists, writers, and musicians. This matchbook was a tiny, pocket-sized billboard for a glamorous night out at the Candle Light Inn, where patrons dined on stone crabs before slipping into 'The Other Room' for a cocktail.
Maker / Origin
This piece was manufactured by the Universal Match Corporation at their Miami, Florida branch. Universal Match was one of the giants of American commercial advertising, turning everyday matchbooks into highly collectible, miniature works of graphic art that defined 20th-century roadside and restaurant culture.
Condition & Value
The matchbook is in good vintage condition with some surface dirt, minor edge wear, and rusting on the staple. The matches themselves have been removed, which is common for safety and preservation. This honest wear does not significantly detract from its nostalgic appeal.
