Overview
This is a clever, rustic secret puzzle box disguised as a solid cross-section of a natural tree branch or small log. Crafted with a bandsaw, it features a hidden interlocking key piece that must be slid out vertically before the top lid can be removed to reveal a felt-lined interior compartment.
Story
Crafted in the dense forests of Northern California, this box was born from the 1970s back-to-the-land movement. Artisans transformed fallen redwood branches into deceptive puzzle boxes, turning raw nature into a secret vault.
Maker / Origin
While often unsigned, these boxes were popularized by independent woodworkers and craft guilds operating along the Pacific Coast Highway. Makers utilized specialized narrow-blade bandsaws to make precise, continuous cuts through solid green or cured logs, celebrating the natural bark and growth rings.
Condition & Value
The box is in good vintage condition with a beautiful polished top surface. There is some natural cracking (checking) in the wood grain and minor wear to the bark texture, which is common for aged natural log pieces. The interior felt lining appears intact.
