This is a vintage Kalimar Strobe-A electronic flash unit designed specifically to mount onto Kodak Pocket Instamatic 50 and 60 cameras. It represents a fascinating transitional era in consumer photography when bulky, expensive electronic strobes began replacing single-use flashcubes. In 1972, Kodak revolutionized photography with the Pocket Instamatic, but users still relied on disposable flashcubes. Kalimar stepped in with this clever electronic strobe, saving photographers from buying endless bulbs.
Maker / Origin
Kalimar was founded in 1952 by Robert J. Lipsitz in St. Louis, Missouri, initially importing high-quality Japanese cameras and optical equipment to the US market. The company became famous for its innovative accessories and budget-friendly lenses, eventually being acquired by Tiffen in 1999.
Condition & Value
The exterior plastic housing and mounting bracket appear to be in very good cosmetic condition with minimal scuffing. The instruction booklet is intact with minor creasing. The value is highly dependent on whether the battery compartment is clean and if the unit successfully powers up and flashes.
