Overview
This is a classic Swatow ware (Zhangzhou) polychrome enameled porcelain charger, prized in Japan as 'Gosu Akae' (呉須赤絵). The central medallion features a spirited, hand-painted Phoenix (Fenghuang) surrounded by floral sprays and iron-red and green enameled border motifs, complete with its traditional Japanese wooden storage box (tomobako).
Story
Seventeenth-century southern Chinese kilns fired these vibrant wares specifically for maritime trade. Japanese tea masters and collectors fell so deeply in love with their bold brushwork that they preserved them in custom fitted wooden boxes for centuries.
Maker / Origin
Produced by folk kilns in the Pinghe and Zhangzhou regions of Fujian, these potters were unconstrained by imperial porcelain rules. They developed a spontaneous, expressive style of overglaze enamel painting that became immensely sought after in Japan and Southeast Asia during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Condition & Value
Displays honest wear consistent with age, including minor surface enamel rubbing, stacking abrasions, and kiln imperfections typical of folk export wares. Accompanied by a weathered period wooden box. Absence of major structural cracks preserves significant market value.
