Overview
This is an authentic vintage 1955 calendar featuring Tom Kelley's legendary 1949 'Golden Dreams' nude photograph of Marilyn Monroe. Published during the height of her early Hollywood fame, this specific calendar sheet preserves the iconic red velvet background and the January 1955 calendar pad.
Story
In 1949, a broke, pre-fame Marilyn Monroe was paid just $50 to pose nude on red velvet. By 1953, Hugh Hefner bought the rights for the first Playboy, and by 1955, these calendars were coveted symbols of a changing America.
Maker / Origin
Tom Kelley was a prominent Hollywood glamour photographer who captured the famous image under the pseudonym 'John Baumgarth' to protect Marilyn's early career. The John Baumgarth Company subsequently mass-distributed the image on novelty calendars, which became an overnight sensation and helped cement Monroe's status as the ultimate mid-century sex symbol.
Condition & Value
The print appears to be in good vintage condition with strong color retention, housed under glass in a decorative gold-finished frame. There is minor potential for edge wear or hidden adhesive damage on the back of the print from the framing process.
