Overview
An exceptionally rare and striking Arts & Crafts period matte green glazed pottery skull. Featuring a rich, textured cucumber-green glaze with subtle yellow-green pooling around the nasal cavity and jawline, this piece is a highly sought-after example of early American art pottery memento mori.
Story
Around 1910, Ohio's clay-rich valleys became the epicenter of the Arts & Crafts movement. While most potteries focused on traditional vases and planters, Zanesville Stoneware produced a small run of these hauntingly beautiful skulls. They served as both artistic statements and functional studio paperweights.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1889, the Zanesville Stoneware Company (ZSC) was famous for its durable, high-quality utilitarian stoneware and art pottery. Unlike its competitors Roseville and Weller, ZSC focused on simpler, bolder forms and is highly celebrated for its iconic, textured matte green glazes which perfectly captured the organic ethos of the Arts & Crafts movement.
Condition & Value
The skull appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major glaze abrasions. The price tag is adhered to the top, which should be removed carefully to avoid pulling any glaze, though the matte finish is generally durable. Excellent original condition is vital for securing top-of-the-market value.
