Around 1910, Ohio's clay-rich valleys became the epicenter of the Arts & Crafts movement. While most potteries focused on traditional vases and planters, Zanesville Stoneware produced a small run of these hauntingly beautiful skulls. Founded in 1889, the Zanesville Stoneware Company (ZSC) was famous for its durable, high-quality utilitarian stoneware and art pottery. Unlike its competitors Roseville and Weller, ZSC focused on simpler, bolder forms and is highly celebrated for its iconic, textured matte green glazes which perfectly captured the organic ethos of the Arts & Crafts movement.
