Overview
A rare group of five vintage 12-ounce 'cone top' beer cans featuring the colorful, nostalgic 'Tavern Beer' label depicting a horse-drawn stagecoach arriving at a bustling colonial tavern. These heavy steel cans represent the pioneering era of canned beer, complete with their distinctive funnel-shaped tops designed to run on existing bottling lines.
Story
Introduced right after Prohibition, these cone top cans allowed small local breweries to compete with national giants. The charming stagecoach scene was designed to evoke warmth and old-world hospitality during the Great Depression.
Maker / Origin
The Lafayette Brewery of Indiana operated from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, surviving the dry years of Prohibition by producing near-beer and soft drinks. When beer was re-legalized, they quickly adopted the innovative cone top can design to package their flagship 'Tavern Beer' without having to invest in expensive new canning machinery.
Condition & Value
The beer cans show moderate to heavy signs of age, including surface rust, paint loss, fading, and oxidation on the cone tops. The leftmost and second-from-left cans show the most significant fading and wear, while the three on the right retain much better color and legibility.
