Overview

This set of three graduated woven rattan and split-bamboo covered sewing baskets features traditional coin, bead, and glass ring embellishments on their lids. Each vessel showcases meticulous coiled basketry paired with vibrant Peking glass, jadeite-style rings, tassels, and authentic cast brass cash coins used as functional tied closures.

Story

Around the turn of the 20th century, Chinese artisans crafted these decorative baskets as cherished export wares for Western homes. Attached Chinese cash coins and colorful rings symbolized good fortune, wealth, and longevity for the seamstress.

Maker / Origin

Crafted by skilled folk artisans across southern China, these pieces were created for the thriving international export market during the late Qing and early Republican periods. Artisans combined traditional local weaving techniques with popular decorative accents like Peking glass and antique cash coins to captivate Western collectors.

Condition & Value

The baskets appear structurally sound with light age-appropriate fraying to the tassels and cordage. The woven rattan shows nice warm patina; all decorative glass rings and coins remain intact. Complete sets in good condition hold higher collector interest. Valued as a complete set of three in varying sizes.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
