Overview
An exquisite Japanese Satsuma earthenware sculptural figure depicting a seated Rakan (enlightened Buddhist disciple) supporting an ornate dragon bowl on his shoulder. It features remarkably fine hand-painted polychrome enamels, raised moriage gilding, delicate chest hair detail, and fine crackle glaze execution.
Story
During Japan's Meiji era, Satsuma artisans redefined ceramic art to captivate Western collectors at world fairs. These holy Rakan figures represented spiritual strength, combined here with fierce dragons painted in pure gold enamels. This piece comes with its original fitted wooden tomobako storage box.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned on the visible surfaces, Satsuma workshops in Kyoto and Satsuma province employed master painters who specialized in highly detailed figurative ceramics. Small atelier studios spent weeks applying micro-painted enamels, gilding, and fine line-work to single sculptural pieces meant for domestic altars or international exports.
Condition & Value
Appears in very good antique condition overall with minor surface age wear and light rubbing to the gilding on high-contact points. The fine glaze crazing is characteristic of authentic Satsuma earthenware. Excellent condition strongly supports higher valuation.
