Overview
This is a beautifully preserved, naturally matched pair of valves from a Hippopus hippopus, commonly known as the Bear Paw Clam or Strawberry Clam. It is distinguished by its heavy, deeply ribbed structure and the striking strawberry-red or purple-brown spotted bands that run along the ridges of its outer shell.
Story
For centuries, Indo-Pacific islanders used these heavy, durable shells as natural bowls, scrapers, and even currency. This specific specimen showcases the brilliant red spots that earned it the nickname 'Strawberry Clam' among early European naturalists.
Maker / Origin
Likely indo-pacific ocean.
Condition & Value
The shell appears to be in very good natural condition with excellent color preservation in the red spots. There is minor natural wear along the delicate outer ridges and margins, which is typical for beach-collected or harvested specimens.
