Overview

This is an ingenious 'roly-poly' or tumbling crystal decanter/flacon, engineered with a rounded base so it tips and rolls gently on a flat surface without spilling its contents. Adorned with classic diamond-point and vertical flute wheel-cut patterns, it features a faceted spear-point ground glass stopper.

Story

Designed around the physics of a low center of gravity, tumbling decanters first captivated Victorian dinner parties as playful conversation starters that wouldn't tip over and spill.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned examples like this were widely produced by master glassworks in Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), France (such as Baccarat styles), and England, the form requires exceptional glassblowing precision so the vessel rights itself or rests safely on its side.

Condition & Value

The crystal appears clean, bright, and free of notable clouding or interior residue. The ground stopper fits well; inspect closely for micro-fleabites along the facet ridges and rim. Excellent preservation maintains the piece's decorative and functional value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
