Overview
This is a monumental 21-inch ceramic umbrella stand featuring deeply molded Art Nouveau foliate, scroll, and geometric panel motifs. It is finished in a striking two-tone majolica glaze, transitioning from a vibrant leaf green at the scalloped rim to a deep, earthy brown-black at the base.
Story
Zanesville, Ohio was once the clay capital of the world, where factories churned out art pottery for fashionable Edwardian homes. This umbrella stand stood in a grand entryway, catching wet parasols of guests arriving by carriage.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Samuel A. Weller in 1872, Weller Pottery grew to become the largest art pottery in the world by the turn of the century. They were famous for employing legendary designers and producing highly tactile, organic glazes that brought the beauty of the natural world indoors.
Condition & Value
The umbrella stand has a significant break/chip on the scalloped upper rim. Crucially, the broken shards have been saved in a bag, which greatly aids in professional conservation. There is also minor glaze wear and typical base scuffing consistent with age and use.
