Overview
An extraordinary, large collection of 76 antique Japanese Oshie-ningyo (padded silk collage dolls) depicting Kabuki actors, historical warriors, and legendary figures, accompanied by miniature props and a framed set of six decorative Hagoita (battledores).
Story
Dating back to the Edo period, these vibrant figures brought the high drama of the Kabuki theater directly into Japanese homes. Crafted from precious silk remnants, they allowed families to celebrate New Year festivals with miniature representations of their favorite stage idols.
Maker / Origin
While often created by skilled domestic artisans or specialized workshops in cultural hubs like Tokyo and Kyoto, some pieces bear workshop labels. The framed Hagoita set features a small paper label reading 'Kuni-haru saku' (Made by Kuniharu), indicating a recognized master craftsman of the late 19th or early 20th century who specialized in theatrical portraiture.
Condition & Value
The collection shows light wear consistent with age, including minor fading to some silks, slight dust accumulation, and minor fraying on the edges of the padded fabric. The hand-painted faces remain remarkably clear and expressive, and the wooden display frame is intact.
