Overview
This is a beautifully preserved mid-century ceramic tea and coffee service featuring Hull's distinctive 'Tokay' pattern, characterized by its warm, speckled pinkish-brown body and contrasting deep burgundy handles and lids. The set includes a stylized teapot, two mugs, a creamer, a lidded sugar bowl, and a matching salt and pepper shaker set.
Story
In 1950, a devastating flood and fire destroyed the Hull Pottery plant, but the company rebuilt immediately. This 'Tokay' set, introduced shortly after the rebuild, brought warmth and organic modernism into post-war American kitchens.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1905 by Addis Emmet Hull, the Hull Pottery Company of Crooksville, Ohio, initially succeeded with utilitarian stoneware before transitioning to highly collectible art pottery. They are most famous for their delicate pastel floral lines of the 1940s and their rich, earthy drip-glaze kitchenware of the 1950s and 60s.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible cracks, major chips, or heavy crazing in the photos. The glaze retains its original luster, and the delicate scrolled handles are intact. Excellent, damage-free condition is crucial for Hull pottery and commands the top end of the value range.
