Overview
An elegant Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk, depicting a courtly garden scene with figures on a pavilion bridge and terrace. It bears the signature 'Haixi Chen Lang Shining Hui' (Painted by the Western Vassal, Giuseppe Castiglione), referencing the famous Jesuit missionary artist who served the Qing court.
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and changed Chinese imperial art forever. Giuseppe Castiglione blended European linear perspective and chiaroscuro with traditional Chinese ink painting, creating a style that captivated three Qing emperors.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known in China as Lang Shining, was an Italian Jesuit brother who served as a court painter under the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors. His unique synthesis of Western realism and Chinese materials made him one of the most influential foreign artists in Chinese history. This piece is a later homage or copy executed in his signature court style.
Condition & Value
The painting appears to be in stable condition with some minor creasing, toning, and light foxing consistent with age. The silk mounting and wooden roller ends appear intact. Excellent preservation of the silk and pigment will keep the value toward the higher end of the range.
