Swiss merchant Ugo Alfons Casal arrived in Kobe in the early 20th century, becoming one of history's greatest lacquer scholars. This refined smoking caddy once held glowing coals and sweet tobacco for guests during the tea ceremony.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned, as was typical for elite Edo-period lacquerware, this set reflects the work of a master lacquer workshop (shikkō) collaborating with a high-end porcelain kiln. Tabako-bon of this quality were custom commissions for wealthy merchant or samurai households to display understated elegance (iki).

Condition & Value

Appears in very good antique condition; the lacquer retains high gloss with expected minor edge rubbing, the porcelain fittings appear intact with minor gilt wear on the knob/rims, and the original wooden box shows authentic age and patina. Complete sets with verified provenance command a notable premium.
