Overview

A Japanese Nanga-style hanging scroll depicting a serene winter landscape with snow-covered mountains and a secluded hut, painted in light colors and ink on paper. Includes an original inscribed wooden storage box (tomobako) signed and sealed by the artist, Shirai Engan.

Story

Painted in 1940, this scroll captures the timeless literary ideal of 'Kouga'—reclining high in snow-bound mountains far from worldly troubles. Created during the tumultuous early Showa period, the quiet landscape served as a spiritual sanctuary for both artist and viewer.

Maker / Origin

Shirai Engan (1896–1983) was an Aichi-born Nanga painter who studied under the famous master Matsubayashi Keigetsu. He regularly exhibited at prestigious national salons, including the Teiten and Niten exhibitions, carrying the literati landscape tradition into the modern era.

Condition & Value

Appears well-preserved with light age-related toning on paper and minor wear to the mounting. The wooden box shows natural age patina. Good condition overall preserves value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
