Overview
A beautiful lobed ceramic bonsai planter featuring hand-painted underglaze blue (sometsuke) Chinese-style landscape (sansui) scenes. The vessel is designed with a flared, key-fret patterned rim, a classic wave-scroll lower border, and rests on low cloud-shaped feet. The interior bottom is left unglazed to allow for proper soil adhesion and moisture control, complete with a central drainage hole.
Story
Created during Japan's golden age of horticultural export, this pot was painted by a Seto artisan mimicking Chinese 'Shina' styles. It brought idealized, miniature mountain sanctuaries directly into the homes of urban collectors.

Seto is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, famous for its high-quality white clay that provides the perfect canvas for vibrant cobalt blue underglaze. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Seto potters excelled in producing 'sometsuke' (blue and white) wares, heavily influenced by Chinese Ming and Qing dynasty aesthetics to satisfy the sophisticated tastes of bonsai enthusiasts.
