Overview

An impressive 44cm Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the Nabeshima style with vibrant enamels and gold overglaze. The central basin features a dense sea of turquoise seigaiha (ocean wave) patterns intermingled with mythological kirin creatures and auspicious treasures.

Story

Forged in the historic kiln fires of Saga, Japan, this grand platter draws inspiration from feudal Nabeshima ware once reserved exclusively for shoguns. Its dense sea of blue-green waves cradles the Kirin, a mythic beast that appears only during times of peace. The Ming Dynasty mark on the base is a traditional homage to master Chinese potters.

Maker / Origin

While originating from the famous Arita ceramic region, Nabeshima porcelain was historically produced in secret kilns at Ōkawachi for the ruling Nabeshima clan. Craftsmen were strictly prohibited from selling these refined wares commercially.

Condition & Value

Visually in very good condition with strong enamel retention and bright gilding. Minor firing flaws and kiln spurs visible on the reverse white ground, which are typical for traditional hand-fired Japanese porcelain. Condition supports strong value.
