Overview
This is a charming trio of stylized bird figurines, hand-carved from natural white alabaster. Each bird is captured in a distinct, lifelike pose—one preening its wing, one looking forward, and one with its head turned—highlighting the soft, translucent quality of the stone.
Story
Crafted in Italy, these birds belong to a mid-century tradition of carving native Volterra alabaster. Tourists flocking to Tuscany fell in love with these tactile, luminous stone creatures, bringing them home as symbols of Italian warmth.
Maker / Origin
While these do not bear an artist's signature, they were produced by skilled artisans in the Volterra region of Tuscany, which has been the heart of European alabaster carving since the ancient Etruscan era. These workshops combined traditional hand-carving techniques with modern mid-century design sensibilities to supply high-end gift shops worldwide.
Condition & Value
The figurines are in good vintage condition with some light surface dust and minor discoloration consistent with age, particularly a small orange spot on the beak of one bird. There are no major chips or fractures visible in the soft stone. Regular gentle cleaning will preserve their luster.
