Overview
This is a beautifully executed mid-century wall crucifix featuring a deeply expressive, hand-carved corpus of Christ set against a dark-stained wooden cross. A striking, stepped-ray gilt halo radiates from behind the intersection of the cross, providing a brilliant contrast to the rich, warm wood tones.
Story
Post-war families sought deeply personal, tactile objects of faith to anchor their homes. This crucifix was hand-carved in an Alpine valley where woodcarving has been a sacred, multi-generational family trade since the 17th century.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece strongly reflects the style of the master carvers of Val Gardena in Northern Italy (such as the ANRI workshops) or Oberammergau in Bavaria. These Alpine regions became world-renowned for their highly skilled artisans who transformed local lindenwood and maple into expressive, museum-quality religious sculptures.
Condition & Value
The crucifix appears to be in excellent vintage condition with a rich patina. The gilding on the halo remains bright with minimal flaking, and the wood shows no signs of splitting or insect damage. This excellent state of preservation helps maintain its value near the top of the market range.
