Story

Created during Japan's golden age of porcelain in the mid-Edo period, these plates catered to discerning Japanese tea masters and wealthy merchants known as sukiyosha. The mythic Kirin design symbolized peace and the arrival of a wise ruler. The central auspicious character anchored formal banquets with noble sentiment.

Maker / Origin

Produced in the premier kilns of Arita, these pieces reflect the master craftsmanship of the Kakiemon tradition's blue-and-white output (Ai-Kaki). Artisans in Arita perfected underglaze cobalt painting using refined imported and local pigments, achieving a characteristic soft, luminous blue against a smooth white porcelain ground.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in good antique condition with typical minor glaze imperfections, kiln spots, and wear consistent with age. No major chips or breaks visible in photos, but lobed rims require close inspection for micro-fritting. Excellent preservation enhances value.
