Overview
This is an exceptional Danish modern teak dining table featuring a brilliant drop-leaf design and a highly sculptural gate-leg trestle base. Designed by Kurt Østervig, the table seamlessly transitions from a compact console to a grand oval dining surface, showcasing the peak of mid-century functionalism.
Story
Designed in Denmark during the golden age of Scandinavian design, this table solved the post-war challenge of urban living. Østervig engineered a system where the legs swing out like a gate to support the massive leaves. It is a masterclass in space-saving elegance.
Maker / Origin
Kurt Østervig (1906–1986) was a trained shipbuilder turned furniture designer, which explains his obsession with structural integrity and organic, flowing wood forms. He established his own studio in 1947 and collaborated with Denmark's finest manufacturers, including Jason Møbler, to create pieces that felt both light and incredibly robust.
Condition & Value
The table appears to be in very good vintage condition with minor surface wear, light scratches, and slight color variation on the top consistent with age and use. The gate-leg mechanisms and hinges appear intact and functional. Excellent original condition maintains the upper bounds of the value range.
