Overview

A classic piece of American decorative glass featuring the iconic 'Hobnail' pattern in opaque white milk glass. This piece showcases a hand-crimped ruffled rim and a high, applied handle, representing the peak…

Story

In the years following World War II, American homes underwent a 'white craze' as housewives sought out bright, clean-looking decor to contrast with the heavy, dark woods of the previous generation.

Maker / Origin

Founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton, the company became the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States.

Condition & Value

The handle appears securely attached and the ruffles look crisp. One must check the very tips of the 'hobs' for roughness, as these are the most common areas for wear. Excellent condition is standard for this price range. These baskets are beloved by collectors but were produced in large quantities.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
