Overview
An exquisite Japanese underglaze blue and white porcelain sake bottle (tokkuri) featuring a dynamic shishi (guardian lion) on one side and a lush peony (botan) on the reverse. The milky-white, smooth porcelain body and delicate brushwork are hallmarks of fine Hirado ware produced for the Matsura daimyo family.
Story
Hirado ware from Mikawachi was strictly controlled by the local daimyo and reserved for aristocratic presentation gifts. Crafted from pristine Amakusa porcelain stone, pieces like this featured soft, painterly cobalt brushstrokes depicting auspicious symbols of power and nobility.
Maker / Origin
The Mikawachi kilns served as the official domain kilns (goyou-窯) for the Matsura clan of Hirado Domain. Artisans were granted samurai status and produced some of Japan's finest white porcelain, famed for its brilliant white body, subtle blue underglaze decoration, and intricate hand-sculpted forms.
