Overview

An elegant porcelain rouleau (paper-roller) vase decorated in the vibrant 'famille verte' (wucai) palette. The body features a narrative scene of warriors and figures in a rocky landscape, while the shoulder is adorned with diaper-pattern bands and cartouches containing scholarly treasures.

Story

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese potters looked back to the golden age of Emperor Kangxi. They revived the brilliant green-dominated enamel palettes to satisfy a massive global demand for classical imperial styles.

Maker / Origin

While bearing a six-character apocryphal Kangxi reign mark on the base, this vase was crafted by highly skilled, anonymous artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. These workshops specialized in recreating the complex, multi-colored enamel masterpieces of the 17th century for sophisticated domestic and export markets.

Condition & Value

The vase appears to be in good overall condition with some typical minor wear to the overglaze enamels and some firing imperfections/dirt on the unglazed foot rim. No visible cracks or major chips are apparent in the photos, though a professional blacklight test is recommended to rule out restored rim chips.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
