Overview

This classic 21cm high meiping (plum vase) features underglaze cobalt blue decoration depicting figures in a landscape setting framed by cresting wave and cloud bands. Shaped with wide high shoulders and a narrow neck originally designed to display single plum blossom branches, it comes complete with a traditional Japanese fitted wooden box (tomobako).

Story

Ming Dynasty potters in Jingdezhen transformed cobalt blue ceramic art, creating high-shouldered meiping vases for scholar-officials. Japanese collectors in the 19th and 20th centuries treasured these classic forms for tea ceremony displays.

Maker / Origin

While styled after early Ming Dynasty (14th-15th century) imperial wares, pieces of this type were produced by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen and surrounding regional kilns to supply eager domestic and Japanese antique markets.

Condition & Value

The vase shows an irregular, unglazed base with fired clay cracks and kiln spots. Minor surface glaze irregularities and age discoloration on the rim are present. The accompanying custom Japanese wooden box helps preserve value. Value is determined by dating verification and kiln origin.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
