Overview

This is an exquisite Chinese porcelain bowl featuring a vibrant ruby-red sgraffito ground (graviata) adorned with finely painted cartouches. The reserve panels showcase beautifully detailed scenes of a rooster, a crane, and a duck amidst blooming peonies and lotuses, executed in the delicate Famille Rose palette.

Story

Created as a tribute to the legendary imperial kilns of the 18th century, this bowl features a rooster, symbolizing punctuality and reliability. The intricate ruby-red background was achieved through a painstaking needle-carving technique.

Maker / Origin

While bearing the mark of the Yongzheng Emperor (who ruled from 1723 to 1735), this bowl was crafted by highly skilled 20th-century artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. These master potters dedicated their lives to replicating the incredibly high standards, thin bodies, and complex enamel recipes of the Qing dynasty's golden age.

Condition & Value

The bowl appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major enamel loss. The gilding along the rim shows minimal wear, which is highly desirable. Excellent condition like this helps secure the higher end of the valuation range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
