Overview
A magnificent, globular Japanese porcelain vase featuring a dynamic underglaze blue wave pattern paired with beautifully rendered Shishi (mythical guardian lions) in reserve panels. The base bears the distinctive underglaze blue orchid mark, the historic signature of the renowned Koransha company of Arita.
Story
In 1875, a group of visionary Arita potters united to form Koransha, aiming to show the world the pinnacle of Japanese porcelain. This vase captures that ambition, contrasting the wild, churning power of the sea with the stoic, protective presence of the mythical Shishi lion.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Fukagawa Eizaemon and his associates, Koransha (meaning 'Company of the Scented Orchid') revolutionized Arita porcelain. They successfully blended traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western technical innovations, winning gold medals at several World's Fairs and becoming official purveyors to the Japanese Imperial Household.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good antique condition with no visible chips, cracks, or major glaze losses in the photos. There is some expected light shelf wear and minor staining on the unglazed foot rim, which is normal for its age. Excellent condition with no hidden restorations will command the higher end of the value range.
