Overview
A copper-nickel clad Washington quarter minted in 1967 during a transitional era for American coinage. This coin features John Flanagan's classic portrait of George Washington on the obverse and a majestic bald eagle on the reverse.
Story
In 1965, the US Mint eliminated silver from quarters due to a massive coin shortage. This 1967 quarter represents the early years of the new 'clad' composition, minted without a mint mark to discourage coin hoarding by collectors.
Maker / Origin
The obverse design was created by sculptor John Flanagan in 1932 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Flanagan's design beat out a highly favored entry by legendary sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser, a decision that sparked controversy at the time.
Condition & Value
This coin shows moderate circulation wear, with flattening of the finer details in Washington's hair and the eagle's breast feathers. There are minor contact marks and scratches consistent with pocket wear, which keeps its value at face value.
