Overview
An authentic ukiyo-e woodblock print triptych depicting the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raikō) and his retainers—including Sakata no Kintoki and Watanabe no Tsuna—disguised as yamabushi mountain monks on their expedition to slay the demon Shuten-dōji on Mount Ōe. Signed 'Shigenobu ga' (重宣画) on all three sheets, this work represents the early career of the artist who later became Hiroshige II.
Story
In 1847, Edo audiences craved heroic folklore. This print captures samurai disguised as wandering monks trekking into the demon Shuten-dōji's lair, guided by a weeping captive washing bloodied robes at a mountain stream.
Maker / Origin
The artist signed this as Shigenobu (重宣), the premier pupil of the landscape master Utagawa Hiroshige. Shigenobu would go on to marry Hiroshige's daughter and officially inherit his master's prestigious name as Hiroshige II in 1858. His work dynamically bridges Utagawa-school warrior drama with the sweeping, atmospheric landscape traditions pioneered by his mentor.
Condition & Value
All three sheets survive intact as a complete triptych. Shows typical antique wear including minor edge fraying/chipping, faint vertical creasing near the margins, and honest age toning/color mellowing consistent with mid-19th century washi. Unbacked or lightly backed condition preserves strong historical appeal.
