Overview
An intricate Chinese export chess set featuring hand-carved pieces mounted on concentric, rotating 'puzzle ball' pedestals. One side is left natural white, while the opposing side is stained a warm tea-brown, all housed in a custom satin-lined presentation case.
Story
In 19th-century Canton, master carvers competed to create the most concentric spheres within a single piece of material. This mid-20th-century set carries that legacy, turning a game of strategy into a display of gravity-defying patience.
Maker / Origin
While individual carvers of these export sets rarely signed their work, they belonged to highly specialized workshops in Guangdong province. These artisans passed down the secretive, delicate techniques of puzzle-ball carving through generations, transforming raw material into nested, moving spheres using only curved L-shaped hand chisels.
Condition & Value
The set appears complete and is well-preserved in its original fitted presentation box with securing straps. No obvious chips or broken spears are visible from the photo, though the delicate nested spheres must be inspected individually for internal fractures. Excellent condition for these fragile sets helps maintain their value.
