Overview
A pair of elegant sterling silver salt and pepper shakers featuring a classic urn shape and delicate Rococo-style scroll engraving.
Story
Salt was once so valuable it was used as currency, but by the time these shakers were made, it had become a centerpiece of the American social ritual.
Maker / Origin
Towle Silversmiths traces its lineage back to the Moulton family of Newburyport, who began silversmithing in 1690, making them one of the oldest continuous craft traditions in America.
Condition & Value
The pieces show significant tarnish and some 'salt rot' (green oxidation) near the threads of the lids, which is common for silver used with salt. They appear to be structurally sound without major dents. A professional polishing would restore their brilliant shine, though some collectors prefer the aged patina.

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.
